The Four Blocks Literacy Model has been introduced and implemented across the school, with the assistance of Jane Farrall, a Literacy Consultant from Melbourne. The Four Blocks - Guided Reading, Self Selected Reading, Writing, and Working with Words - represent four different approaches to teaching children to read. Daily instruction in all Four Blocks provides numerous and varied opportunities for all children to learn to read and write. Doing all Four Blocks acknowledges that children do not all learn in the same way and provides substantial instruction to support whatever learning personality a child has. The students have made many pleasing improvements in their literacy skills and are enjoying an exciting variety of reading and writing activities.

One incentive that has been developed and implemented across the school to promote purposeful writing is the 'Malkara Mail'. Each Tuesday the whole school writes letters to each other and the 'Malkara Mail' is delivered to each classroom. The students enjoy receiving their mail and reading what their friends have written.
