Malkara Specialist School provides a preschool and primary program for students who have moderate to severe intellectual disabilities and autism. Many students also have associated sensory or communication impairments, or a physical disability.
The students range in age from 4 to 12 years. Class groups are small, with an average of 7 in each class and students are placed in these groups according to their age and educational needs. Each class group has a teacher and at least one Learning Support Assistant (LSA).
The school enrols students who are ACT residents. Students are referred by teachers and counselors and recommendations are made to the Directorate of Education and Training.
The ACT ETD have recently opened up an on-line enrolment process for all students. Due to the need to establish eligibility for Malkara Specialist School prior to enrolling, prospective families are asked not to use the on-line enrolment at this stage.
